Pupils across Belfast will have the opportunity to turn paper into money thanks to an
environmental initiative in partnership with the city council, Yellow Pages and the Woodland Trust.

The race to recycle old Yellow Pages directories is underway as dozens of schools compete for a share of the £600 cash prize and a £100 bonus prize in the Yellow Woods Challenge.

And for every pound awarded, Yellow Pages will match that with a donation to the Woodland Trust, the UK’s leading woodland conservation charity.

Martin Doherty, Waste Manager with Belfast City Council, said: “This is a fun competition but with a serious message. It’s a great way of diverting these old directories away from landfill while educating children about the environment and, in particular, the importance of recycling. The old Yellow Pages directories will be recycled and made into egg boxes.”

Rather than bring the old Yellow Pages directories into school, however, children are being urged to recycle the directories in their household blue bins or kerbside recycling boxes and bring only the front covers and signed by a parent and given into their teacher so they can keep count of how many have been recycled.

Yellow Pages is offering £300 to the school that collects the most directories per pupil and £200 and £100 respectively to the school in second and third place.

Janice Hix, Corporate Partnerships Manager with the Woodland Trust, added:

“We hope children enjoy the competition and get to know more about native trees and their importance.”

Funds raised through the Yellow Woods Challenge will be invested in the Woodland Trust’s ambitious children’s tree planting
campaign, Tree For All, which has a target of planting 12 million trees by 2009.

The competition will run until February 2, 2007. A special reception for the winning school will be held at Belfast City Hall in the New Year.
